Show and Tell: Early 50's Lace Cocktail Dress

It's time for more Show and Tell!

I found this beauty hidden among the modern dresses at Value Village. This particular Value Village has a vintage section which is filled with over priced polyester. Whoever did the pricing did not know what this dress was! Lucky me!

This is another one which does not fit me. I bought it because a) I couldn't resist the colour b) I love a good find at V.V. and c) It's in amazing condition.
It's not too big, I suppose I could always have it taken it...but for now I just enjoy owning it.

The skirt has this beautiful short train on the back. It's very subtle, but it gives the skirt a little extra volume.

There was never a belt for this dress. It has a metal side zipper and for some reason I find the small hook at the waist wonderful. It's just a small detail that makes the dress look sleeker on the wearer.

See? Here's the price tag still on it. lol! Amazing price right? 

And the interior construction.

And for some strange reason I find such great pleasure in the tidy construction of the interior of the zipper.

Angels in America: Millennium Approaches. The OFFICIAL Plug.

Here's the official plug for the show I'm working on right now. We open on Wednesday night.

 

The play is called Angels in America: Millennium Approaches.

Here's what Wikipedia says about it:

The tone of the play goes back and forth between comedy, dark humor and the supernatural. Some special effects may require special machinery (for example, the Angel is supposed to crash through the ceiling of the theater) but Kushner insists on the fact that this machinery is meant to be visible by the spectators. In the "Playwright's Notes" he says: "The play benefits from a pared-down style of presentation, with minimal scenery and scene shifts done rapidly (no blackouts!), employing the cast as well as stagehands — which makes for an actor-driven event, as this must be. The moments of magic [...] are to be fully realized, as bits of wonderful theatrical illusion — which means it's OK if the wires show, and maybe it's good that they do..." It is definitely an instance of what Bertolt Brecht theorized as the Verfremdungseffekt, which can be translated as "alienation effect" or "estrangement effect", whose goal is to constantly remind the spectators that what they are seeing is not taken from the real world but is an artefact created from scratch.

One of the many particularities of Angels in America is that each of the eight main actors has one or several other minor roles to play: for example, the actor playing the nurse Emily also embodies the Angel of America. And in this multiple doubling of roles, the gender of each character is deliberately played upon: the actor playing Hannah, Joe's mother, also plays the part of the Rabbi. This shows the dramatist's decision to throw some light on the arbitrariness and elasticity of the traditional notions of gender categories.

It is one of my all time favourite plays and I am beyond excited to be working on it.

Respite

As you know, I've been working non-stop since New Years. Not that I'm complaining. Work is good. But getting away from it is also good.

It is officially Spring in Winnipeg. The snow melted suddenly last week and it has been unusually warm. With the quick thaw, The Boy decided we should go for a drive out of town. I am always up for a leisurely drive in the country. It's so relaxing.

We ended up at the end of a dirt road by the Red River. The Boy just drives and we never know where we're going to end up, but we always end up in the most beautiful places.

The river was still covered with ice and the ground was free of snow. It felt kind of magical.

Show and Tell: 1940's Rayon Crepe and Velvet Cocktail Dress

This is another beauty from my collection. Unlike many of my other pieces this one is in less than stellar condition. There are a number of split seams, the velvet appliqué has seen better days and there is some staining and fading on the skirt.
Nevertheless I think it is a stunning dress. I guess I see what it once was, not so much the state that it is in now.
I have never attempted to clean or repair it. Maybe because it is too big for me, so there has never been a need to have it in wearable condition. That, and I fear attempting to clean and repair it improperly would damage it further. Pretty soon it's going to be an antique!

There is something so beautiful about the colour combination of this dress that I love so much.

I just love the two pleats on the sleeve. It's details like this that make me love vintage so much!

And as always, the interior construction.

The staining and fading is really pronounced when you turn the dress inside-out.

This dress was given to me by a friend in university. Her mother was going to throw it and another dress out. She brought them to school and gave them to me. I'll show you the other dress one day!
